Robin: No.

Ted: Come on, no purple tuba?

Robin: It’s a Smurf penis or no dice.

(Metro News 1 Van appears)

Producer: (from inside van) there you are! We’ve got a jumper! Some crazy guy on the Manhattan Bridge. Come on, you’re covering it!

Robin: Um, alright. I’ll be right there. (To Ted) I’m sorry. I had a really great time tonight.

Ted: Yeah.

[Flashback Over]

Marshall: So? Did you kiss her?

Ted: No. The moment wasn’t right. (They sigh) Look, this woman could be my future wife; I want our first kiss to be amazing.

Lily: Aww, Ted that’s so sweet. So you chickened out like the little bitch.

Ted: What? I did not chicken out! You know what? I don’t need to take first kiss advice from some pirate who hasn’t been single since the first week of college.

Lily: Ted, anyone who’s single would tell you the same thing. Even the dumbest single person alive, and if you don’t believe me…call him.

(Calls Barney)

(Barney’s playing laser tag on the other end of the line)

Barney: (Phone) Hey loser, how’s not playing laser tag? Because playing laser tag is awesome! Oh, I killed you Connor; don’t make me get your mom!

Ted: Hey, listen. I need your opinion on something.

Barney: Okay, meet me at the bar in fifteen minutes—AND SUIT UP!

1. No Dice.

No Dice의 Dice는 주사위, 노름, 주사위 놀이를 뜻하는데, Dice 앞에 이를 부정하는 No를 붙여 No Dice라고 하면 실패, 안되는 것, 소용없음이라는 뜻의 idiom으로 사용됩니다.

Ex. So let's put some meat on them on bones. How about Kevin Kline for president, based on his role in the movie "Dave?" No Dice. He played a guy pretending to be a president. 

남자배우 케빈 클라인의 대통령 후보자격은 어떨까요. 영화 ' 데이브'에서 대통령 역을 연기했던 것에 비추어 말입니다. 안될 일입니다. 그는 가짜 대통령 역을 연기했기 때문입니다.

3. chickened out

일반적으로 chicken은 은어나 속어로 좋지 않은 뜻으로 많이 쓰입니다.

보통 '겁쟁이'라는 뜻으로 말이죠.

여기처럼 동사로 쓰일 때는 '겁내다'라는 뜻이고, 보통 동사로 쓰일때는 out이 붙습니다. 

out은 어떤 장소나 상황에서 나오잖아요. 그래서 chicken 겁내서 out 즉, 어떤 장소나 상황에서 나올 때 쓰는 말입니다.

If I don't fight him, everyone will say that I chickened out.

4. You know what?

you know what? 이나 guess what이나 비슷하다고 보시면되고요,

 

you know what?이거는 약간 묻는듯이느낌이나잖아요.

you know what?이렇게 말할때는 아그거알어그거알어?!!!

막흥분된듯이 말하는것이고!

 

그러면서 상대방은 what?이렇게 되물을수도있는상황이고

그전에 you know what ~~~~이런식으로 상대방말할틈도안주고 말할수도있는것이고

 

그리고 you know 이거는 묻는느낌이없잖아요.

you know~~~~ 이렇게말할때는 아왜있잖아 ~~~~~

약간 이건진정된듯이말하죠? 

 

위에것은 약간 흥분된듯이말하고잇는데 !!

뭐이런식으로 생각하시면 될듯십네요

5. dumbest

[ADJ] If you call a person dumb, you mean that they are stupid or foolish.

The questions were set up to make her look dumb.

6. gotta

= have got to

Americans prefer have to  for this meaning and use must for inferences.

 

example : Any ESL student has to spend a lot of time on spelling.

 

Have got to - expresses an urgent necessity, mostly in informal context

 

example : i've got to study this list of terms before class tomorrow.

 

저 둘의 뜻이 같다는 것 또한 틀린 말은 아닌 것이

둘은 모두 우리말로 "해야한다"라는 의무를 뜻을 가지고 있다.

 

하지만 우리에게(혹은 나에게만..ㅋ) 낯선 have got to의

key words는 urgent necessity와 informal context다.

 

생각해보면 친구들이랑 전화하다가, 또는 학교 끝나고 수다떨다가

i've got to go!(= gotta go) 라고 하지 않는가!

 

그러니까 i have to go 라고 해서 틀린건 아니지만서도

시기적으로 급하게 이행해야할 의무에 대해서는

주로 have got to를 사용 한다는 것이다.
