Scene Three

(The Apartment)

Marshall: Hey!

Lily: Urgh. I’m exhausted. It was finger painting day at school, and a five year old boy (takes coat off revealing a purple hand print on her right breast) got to second base with me. Wow, you’re cooking?

Marshall: Yes, I am.

Lily: Aww—(They kiss) Are you sure that’s a good idea after last time? You looked really creepy without eyebrows.

Marshall: I can handle this; I’m full of surprises tonight.

Lily: So there’s more surprises? Like what?

Narrator: Marshall was in his second year of law school, so he was pretty good at thinking on his feet.

Marshall: BOOGITY BOO! And that’s all of them! I’m goanna go… cook. (Leaves)

[Cut to the bar, Ted is chatting with Yasmine]

Ted: I’m so happy for Marshall, I really am. I just couldn’t imagine settling down right now.

Yasmine: So do you think you’ll ever get married?

Ted: Well maybe eventually. Some fall day. Possibly in Central Park. Simple ceremony, we’ll write our own vows. But--eh--no DJ, people will dance. I’m not going to worry about it! Damn it, why did Marshall have to get engaged? (Yasmine laughs) Yeah, nothing hotter than a guy planning out his own imaginary wedding, huh?

Yasmine: Actually, I think it’s cute.

Ted: Well, you’re clearly drunk (pulls her wine glass away. Hold up glass to bartender) ONE MORE FOR THE LADY!

[Cut to Kitchen with Marshall and Lily. Lily has a pan out sautéing, Marshall jumps off a countertop]

Marshall: Okay, look what I got (runs to the fridge. Takes out wine bottle)

Lily: Aw—honey. Champagne! (hands it to Marshall)

Marshall: (after short silence) Yeah. (hands it back)

Lily: (realizing) No, you are too old to be scared to open a bottle of champagne!

Marshall: I’m not scared.

Lily: Then open it!

Marshall: Fine (takes bottle. Looks at it for a couple of seconds) Please open it (hands it to Lily)

Lily: You are unbelievable, Marshall. No—(Scene splits in half and shows both Lily and Marshall on top arguing and Ted and Yasmine on the bottom mingling)

Narrator: There are two big questions a man has to ask in life. One you plan out for months, the other just slips out when you’re half drunk at some bar.

Marshall: (To Lily) will you marry me?

Ted: (To Yasmine) you wanna go out sometime?

(Scene split ends, and returns to Lily and Marshall’s scene)

Lily: Of course, you idiot! (hugs him and they fall back)

[Cut to Scene with Ted and Yasmine at bar]

Yasmine: I’m sorry; Carl’s my boyfriend (points to bartender)

Ted: What's up, Carl?

[Cut to Scene in Kitchen, Marshall and Lily lay up while on the ground, after sex]

Marshall: I promised Ted we wouldn’t do that.

Lily: Did you know there’s a pop tart under your fridge?

Marshall: No, but dibs. Where’s that champagne? I wanna drink a toast with my fiancé.

Lily: aww (claps. They kiss)

Marshall: I don’t know why I was so scared of this. Pretty easy right? (Pops cork, hit’s Lily’s eye)

Lily: (YELLS)

Marshall: (covers mouth) OH!

Ted: Why am I freaking out all of a sudden? This is crazy! I’m not ready to settle down.

Barney: (ignoring) how does Carl land a Lebanese girl?

Ted: It’s always been “don’t even think about it till you’re thirty”

Barney: Exactly—the guy doesn’t even own a suit!

Ted: Plus Marshall’s found the love of his life. Even if I was ready, which I’m not, but if I was it’s like, “Okay, I’m ready! Where is she?” (Spots Robin)

Narrator: and there she was.

[Fade out]

1. second base with

미국에서는 성(性)생활에 대해서 얘기를 할 때 야구와 관련된 비유를 종종 듭니다. 

1루, 2루, 3루, 그리고 본루(home base)로 나누는데, 지역마다 살짝 다를 수는 있습니다만 대부분 다음과 같이 분류됩니다.

• First Base는 키스를 말합니다만 간단히 "톡" 치는 키스가 아니라 혀를 사용한 프렌치키스를 말합니다.
• Second Base는 손으로 파트너의 몸부위를 만지는 것을 말합니다.
• Third Base는 삽입 없이 갖는 성관계를 말합니다.
• Home Base는... 끝까지 가는 것을 말합니다. (자세한 내용은 상상에 맡기겠습니다.)

2. creepy [kri:pi]

[ADJ] If you say that something or someone is creepy, you mean they make you feel very nervous or frightened.

3. Like what?

참 자주 쓰게 되는 말 가운데 하난데요, 예를 들면 for example이라는 뜻입니다.  

상대방이 Like what?이라고 물었을땐, 예를 들면 어떤 것 들이 있습니까? 라고 물어보는 것이라고 생각하시면 됩니다.  

또 what이 들어가는 말 가운데 So what? 이라는 표현이 있습니다.  

그래서 어쨌다는 거죠?라는 말인데요, 상대방과 언쟁을 할때 쓸수 있는 말 입니다.  

4. thinking on his feet

"Think on one’s feet”는 ‘정신적으로 기민한’, ‘임기응변의 능력이 뛰어난’이라는 뜻이죠. 

 “Barack Obama Has Problems Thinking On His Feet (오바마는 즉흥적으로 대답을 하는데 능숙하지 못하다)”

미국 민주당 대선 후보인 Obama 상원의원이 scripted speech (원고를 보면서 하는 연설)만 잘하지 즉석에서 던져지는 기자들의 기습질문에 답하는 데는  익숙하지 못하다는 내용의 Blog에 제목으로 올려진 글입니다.

예문)

Being introverted myself, I'm not very good at thinking on my feet or confident about saying things straight out.

(나는 원래 내성적이라 즉석에서 임기응변하는 것을 잘하지 못하고 자신 있게 솔직히 내 느낌을 말하지도 못한다.)

 

임기응변에 능하다는 표현을 살펴볼까요?

제일 흔히 구어적으로 쓰는 표현이 “play by ear”인 것 같습니다. 원래는 남이 치는 피아노연주를 듣고 즉석에서 따라 연주한다는 뜻이었답니다.  하지만 미리 정해진 계획 없이 상황이 전개되는 대로 대처해나간다는 뜻으로 일상 대화에서 많이 쓰입니다. Play라는 단어대신 다른 동사를 사용하기도 합니다.

예문) I write by ear, and rarely with any exact notion of how I want it to come out.

(나는 즉흥적으로 글을 쓰죠, 내 작품이 어떻게 완성되었으면 하는 생각을 하는 경우는 거의 없습니다.)

 

Roll with the punches도 “상황이 벌어지는 대로 이에 맞추어 처신하다”라는 뜻입니다.  권투에서 유래한 표현 같습니다.  말 그대로 상대방의 펀치가 날라오는 대로 나도 몸을 놀려야 겠죠. 

예문) She had to perform shortly after her brother died, but she rolled with the punches and put on a great show.

(그녀는 오빠가 죽은 바로 후에도 연주를 해야 했지만 그 상황에 잘 대처해서 훌륭한 공연을 했다.)

 

off the top of one’s head나 offhand, off the cuff도 준비 없이, 즉석에서란 뜻입니다.

예문) As per usual, Collins's new album reflects his personal life. "The words come off the top of my head. I rarely sit down with a bit of paper and wonder, `What shall I write?'

(언제나 마찬가지지만 Collins의 새 앨범의 노래들에는 그의 사생활이 반영되어있습니다.  “가사들은 그 때 그 때 머리에 떠오르는 대로 썼어요.  원고지를 앞에 놓고 앉아서 ‘자, 무슨 내용을 써야 하지?’하는 의문을 가진 적은 거의 없었죠.”)

 

예문) If the doctor can tell offhand what the problem is, they will give you medicine on the spot.

(만약 즉석에서 몸의 어디가 이상이 있는지 알 수 있다면 의사들은 바로 그 자리에서 처방을 할 것이다.)

 

(준비없이) 즉석에서 ~을 하다란 뜻의 문어적인 표현으로는 improvise나 extempore가 있죠.  물론 extempore는 형용사, 부사로 사용해야 하구요.

 

예문) So he improvised a bedtime story that was designed to introduce his son to music.

(그래서 음악에 관심을 갖게 하기 위해 즉석에서 꾸며낸 이야기를 침대에서 아들에게 들려주었다.)

 

(예문) The extempore speeches were an exciting part of the program.

(그 프로그램중 흥미로운 것은 즉흥연설 이었다.)

5. you wanna go out sometime?

go out 은 말그대로 그냥 나가다.  밖으로 나가다   .   심지어 데이트 하다.  뭐 그렇게 추상적이구요..

 

go out of sth.. 

 

he went out of the town..

그 타운밖으로 나갔다.  

 

어디서부터 나간건지 분명하게 잡아내죠.

 

get out of it. 제거하다.  it을 제거하다.. 이렇게 of 뒤에 명확한 개념이 따라오죠..

~~서 부터 라는 의미가 ; out of..

 

out of heart. 가슴으로부터.

out of curiosity. 호기심으로부터. (~을 하다.) 

 

이렇게 출처가 분명한것같구요..

 

go out 출처는 분명치 않고요..  어디서 부터시작된게 중요한게 아니라, 그냥 밖으로 나가다 그런 의미로,.

 

he went out to a park.  공원으로 갔다.

이렇게요..

 

get out 나가버러..

get out of here. 여기 here 에서 사라져..

7. dibs

dibs 는 속어로 돈이라는 뜻도 있지만 소유권의 의미도 있다.  (claim, rights)

우리말로는 내가 먼저 찜을 했다, 내가 먼저 침 묻혔다 정도의 유치한 느낌인데 

어린이들이 자주 사용한다.  (DIbs 라는 보드 게임도 있다. ) 

친구들 사이에서 유머러스하게 표현할 때 쓴다.  

 

I got dibs on that last piece of cake. 케이크 남은 조각은 내가 찜했다. 

I have dibs on that girl over there! 저쪽 여자는 내가 찍었다! 

Can you call dibs on a girl? 여자를 찜할 수 있는 거야? 

자동차 조수석을 찜할때는 다른 말 필요없이 shotgun 을 외치면 된다.  옛날 서부에서 조수석에 있는 사람이 총을 

들고 강도나 인디언(--;;) 한테서 마차를 보호했다는데서 유래했다고 한다. 

영국에서는 dibs 대신 Bags 나 Bagsy 를 사용하기도 한다. 

8. freaking out

Freak out은 get surprised나,  get shocked와는 다릅니다.

get surprised나,  get shocked가 "놀라다, 충격적이다" 라는 것을 의마한다면, 

freak out은 자제력을 잃을만큼 놀라거나 충격, 분노의 상태를 말합니다.

9. slips out 

if something slips out, you say it when you do not intend to

Lily: 어흐... 피곤해.  학교에서 손그림 그리기를 했는데, 5살짜리 꼬맹이가 나를 이리저리 만져댔어. 와우!. 요리하고 있었네. 

Marshall: 응.

Lily: 지난번 이후에도 이게 좋은생각인거 같아? 너 눈썹 없어져서 진짜 이상했어.

Marshall: 이번에 잘 할거야. 오늘밤 깜짝 놀라게 될거야.

Lily: 더 놀라운게 있어? 그게 먼데?

Narrator: 마샬은 로스쿨 2학년일때라 임기응변에 능숙했어.

Marshall: #$@#%! 이거였어. 나 가야겠어.. 요리하러.

Ted: 마샬을 생각하고 난 정말 기뻐, 정말이야. 나는 단지 지금일 줄 몰랐어.

Yasmine: 그래서 너는 결혼 안할려고?

Ted: 글쎄 언젠가는 하겠지. 언젠가는. 아마 센트럴공원에서. 조촐한 예식에. 우리는 서약을 할거야. 밴드는 괜찮지만 DJ는 아니고, 사람들이 춤을 출거야. 난 그걸 걱정하진 않을거야! 젠장. 왜 마샬이 약혼해야하거지? 그래, 약혼식을 그려보는 남자보다 멋진건 없지. 

Yasmine: 귀여워..

Ted: 글세, 너 완전히 취했네! 여기 한잔더!

Marshall: 좋아. 내가 뭘 준비했는지 봐봐!

Lily: 자기야~ 샴페인이네!

Marshall: 예~

Lily: 안돼. 샴페인 따는거 무서워할 나이는 지났잖아.

Marshall: 안무서워.

Lily: 그럼 열어봐!

Marshall: 좋아. 좀 열어줘!

Lily: 어처구니 없구만, 마샬. 안돼.

Narrator: 남자가 일생동안 할 질문이 두가지가 있지. 하나는 몇달동안 고민하는거고, 다른 하나는 바에서 반쯤 취했을때 나도 모르게 튀어 나오는거지.

Marshall: 나랑 결혼해줄래?

Ted: 언제 데이트 할래요?

Lily: 물론이지! 이 바보야.

Yasmine: 미안해요. 칼이 내 남자친구예요.

Ted: 잘지내지, 칼!

Marshall: 테드하고 안하겠다고 했는데.

Lily: 냉장고 아래에 팝타르 있는거 알았어?

Marshall: 아니, 근데 내꺼 찜! 샴페인이 어딨지? 우리 자기랑 축배하고 싶다고.

Lily: 어머.

Marshall: 내가 이걸 왜 갑자기 무서워하는거지? 아주 쉽잖아!

Lily: 악~

Marshall: 오!

Ted: 왜 내가 갑자기 놀랜거지? 이건 미친짓이야. 난 아직 철들 때가 아니라고.

Barney: 어떻게 칼이 레바논 여자랑 사귀는거지?

Ted: 항상 30살전까지 결혼은 생각도 하지 않는 거였잖아.

Barney: 맞아! 걔는 정장도 안 입잖아.

Ted: 게다가 마샬은 인생의 반려자를 찾았어. 나는 준비됐됬다면, 아니 안됬어. 하지만 내가 그렇더라도 마찬가지야. 좋아 난 준비됬다고, 그녀는 어딨는거야?

Narrator: 근데, 그녀가 거기 있었어.
